We are proud to support the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and their autism initiatives which help to make our communities a little safer and more inclusive. Keep it up!For families who have a loved one with autism, a simple piece of information can make a difference when deputies respond to an emergency. Sheriff Richard R. Del Toro, Jr., is continuing his commitment to strengthening public safety through the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Autism Initiative, designed to help deputies provide safer, more informed responses when responding to calls involving individuals with autism. The initiative helps deputies recognize when a person with autism may be present and draw on their training to adjust their approach to the individual’s needs.

The Sheriff’s Office is providing free autism awareness decals to St. Lucie County residents. The decals can be placed near the front door of a home or in the rear window of a vehicle to alert responding deputies that a person with autism may be present. A person with autism may communicate differently or may not respond to, understand, or react to verbal commands in the way deputies ordinarily expect.

The Sheriff’s Office also offers Project Lifesaver, a safety program designed to help protect individuals who are at increased risk of wandering or becoming lost. Residents can learn more about the Autism Initiative, Project Lifesaver, and other available resources by visiting stluciesheriff.com.

September is Suicide Prevention Month. 💜

Suicide prevention isn't only about what we do at the moment of crisis. It's also about what happens long before someone reaches that point.

It's checking on the friend who has gone quiet.

It's noticing when a coworker doesn't seem like themselves.

It's taking a veteran seriously when they say they're having a hard time adjusting.

It's asking your spouse, your teenager, your parent- or yourself- "Are you really okay?"

And then being willing to listen to the answer.

Mental health care shouldn't begin only when someone reaches their breaking point. The conversations we have before the crisis matter, too.
